What is the difference between a spreader beam and a lifting beam?

A spreader beam is loaded in compression between two sling legs rising to the crane hook. A lifting beam hangs from a single top pick point and is loaded in bending. Spreader beams are typically lighter and better for long spans; lifting beams win when headroom is tight.
